van-scoy-200x300Dr. Steve Van Scoy, the Director of Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, has been honored by Pacific Coast Business Times as a “Champion of Neonatal Care” in their “Champions in Healthcare” issue.

Dr. Van Scoy was nominated by Dr. Brad Knox, the Chief of Medical Staff at Sierra Vista for “for taking care of the most vulnerable in San Luis Obispo County for 25 years – and particularly for his tremendous work during the pandemic.”

As the Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo – which is San Luis Obispo County’s only Level III NICU – Dr. Van Scoy leads an advanced team and facility that constantly progresses with best practices, so that it remains state-of-the-art, every day.

When COVID-19 forced dramatic changes to how care could be provided to these tiny, vulnerable babies, Dr. Van Scoy was leading the way to pivot and create safe spaces – even as the healthcare industry was still learning about the new world of COVID-19. A couple of examples:

  • Dr. Van Scoy was a proponent and oversaw the implementation of the new NicView system that securely allows parents to see their children 24/7 on personal mobile devices when they can’t be with their child due to work, etc.
  • Also, since the volunteer “Cuddlers” could not be in the NICU during the pre-vaccine and heights of the pandemic variants, Dr. Van Scoy oversaw the acquisition and implementation of automated rocking machines to help both patients and staff.

An advocate of family-focused, team-based care, Dr. Van Scoy directs a customized NICU where a blend of an open floor plan and private settings allow for immediate team responses with just a glance to colleagues, while also providing for calm healing. Every patient, every family has its unique needs.

For 25 years, Dr. Van Scoy has created an “Island of Miracles” for San Luis Obispo County. In fact, outcomes at Sierra Vista’s NICU rival or exceed those of large academic centers, such as Stanford and UCLA per data compiled by the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC).

“The Sierra Vista NICU has long been the jewel of San Luis Obispo County’s health resources, and it’s time we recognize the leader and inspiration to families and colleagues alike,” said Dr. Knox.
